Entering the
Catalog
Click the Local Catalog icon. A search screen will appear which will
allow you to search for items by several different criteria.
The Simple Search
(Combined Search) tab allows you to perform a normal search. You can specify the
search terms, the type of search (Keyword, Author, Title, Subject, etc.), and a
single limit on the search. You can also select from the main list of limits
before performing your search.
To
perform a search, do the following:
- Enter the words you want
to search for in the Find this: field.
- Select the type of
search that you want to perform by choosing a search type from the Find
Results in: the drop-down list.
(Optional) Choose what type of limit you want applied to the search by either:
(1) selecting a limit from the Simple Limit menu or by
(2) clicking the Limits button and choosing from the entire list of limits.
- Click the Search
button to begin your search. Click the Reset button to clear the search
page.
A
results list of the search will appear. Each item on the list will display the
location of the item, call number, and charge status. If you wish to
view the item record, click the underlined title of the item.
If the title has more than one holding this will be noted. Click the underlined
title for item information. If more than one page of list results are found a
Previous and Next button will appear with numbers between. To
move to the next list click Next or the next number sequence. You may
continue to move through the lists using Next, Previous, or number.
Located at the top of the item record are several view option tabs.
- Brief Record.
The record will be displayed as a brief
record.
- Detailed Record.
The detailed record may provide
links to additional information on the author or title.
- Table of Contents.
This tab allows you to display a table of contents for the record, if it is
available.
- Linked Resources.
Linked items may be available for the record. Clicking this tab will display
these resources. To view, click the title of the linked resource.
- MARC record.
Clicking this tab displays the MARC record for the item.
Click the Builder search tab to find records using
keywords located anywhere in a record, or only in specific fields. To perform a
Builder search:
- Type in search term(s)
in Search For text box. (Punctuation, case, and word order are ignored.) Your
search terms are automatically truncated on the right, so you don't need to
use a question mark (?) for truncation.
- Default search criteria
can be modified for your search:
- Select, from the
Search For drop-down list, whether you want to search for all the search
terms, any of the search terms, or the search terms as a phrase.
- To narrow your search,
select which Boolean operator you want applied to the next search term(s):
AND, OR, or NOT.
- Entering search terms
in the following Search For text box and select options from the
drop- down menu as needed.
- Click the
Limits icon if you want
to limit your keyword search based on other criteria.
Click the Search button to begin
your search. Click the Reset button to clear the search page.
The
Course Reserve tab allows you to search for items on reserve for various
classes. To perform a Course Reserve search:
- Select one item from one
(or more) of the following drop-down lists: Instructor, Department, Course, or
Section. Note: you cannot Limit a course reserve search.
- Click the Search button
to begin your search. Click the Reset button to clear the search page.
Reserve Items are located at the Reference Desk.
Electronic Course Reserve: Some course materials
are available online. Search for E-Reserve items just as you search for other
course reserves. You must select a linked item and logon to view and/or print
these articles. Click E-Reserve for detailed instructions.
